Welcome Woodmen Tower Falcons Joslyn, Orpheum, Durham, Big O

Woodmen of the World is proud to announce the names of the newest batch of Woodmen Tower falcon chicks. The young peregrines were named in honor of Omaha’s historical attractions, all of which are in the downtown area. Their names are:

Joslyn, female, band #B/81

Orpheum, female, #B/82

Durham, female, #B/83

Big O, male, #93/A 

These names represent downtown Omaha – the central hub of entertainment in the city, this area has its own personality and culture. The Joslyn Art and Durham museums are art deco masterpieces, and the Orpheum Theater has served as the home of the finest in local and national performing arts for nearly a century. Together, these historical attractions represent a part of the “Big O” and now give our falcon chicks names they can proudly live up to, no matter what city they end up nesting in.

Woodmen of the World held a Facebook contest to name the chicks. During the contest period fans submitted their group of four names on the Woodmen of the World Facebook page (WOWInsurance) sweepstakes tab. An internal Woodmen of the World committee reviewed and selected the top five group name entries. These top five entries were posted on the WOWInsurance Facebook page contest tab, where fans voted for their favorite. The winning name suggestions were submitted by Leslie Jorgensen, who will receive a framed picture of the falcons and an invitation to the 2014 VIP Banding.

TOMORROW is the last day to enter the “Name the Falcons” sweepstakes! The top five groups of names have been posted on the WOWInsurance Facebook sweepstakes tab.

Voting will be open from Thursday, June 13 through noon on Thursday, June 20. The winner and winning names will be announced on Friday, June 21 via Facebook, followed by a posting on Twitter and the FalconWatch blog.

Name the Falcons Contest Ends Monday!

Mintaka and Hera need your help finding four perfect names for their new bundles of joy. The winner of the naming contest will receive a framed picture of the falcons and an invitation to the 2014 VIP Falcon Banding. Post your four name ideas on the Woodmen of the World Facebook "Name the Falcons" contest tab through noon on Monday, June 10.

After an internal WOW committee reviews the names, the top five groups will be re-posted on the WOW Facebook contest tab, where fans can then vote for their favorite. The top five selections will be posted and voting will begin on Thursday, June 13 and last through noon, on Thursday, June 20. The winner will be announced on Friday, June 21 via Facebook, followed by Twitter and the FalconWatch blog.

Banding Day 2013

It's not easy getting to the chicks.

But once Raptor Recovery Nebraska and the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission staff got them into the box, they were moved to another room to determine their gender and to band their legs.

Here is one of the chicks getting an examination.

We have three females and one male chick to name. Today at 10:00 a.m. Raptor Recovery Nebraska and the NE Game & Parks Commission banded the four Woodmen Tower falcon chicks. We are excited to announce that this year we have three female falcons and one male falcon!
